This site has some excellent information on the tallgrass prairie but be careful not to get the wildlife of the tallgrass prairie mixed up with the wildlife of the short and mixed grass prairies.
Ferrets and prairie dogs did not live on the tallgrass prairie. They lived on the short and mixed grass prairies, therefore they would not have been found in Iowa.
