Scout Programs

Programs are available to all scouting groups here at the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge. Tours, stewardship and the earning of some badges can be accomplished throughout the year. Many different types of programs are offered to give the scouts a better feel of what Iowa looked like when the first settlers arrived. Here are the badges that they can earn while they are here:

Boy Scouts
Sharing Your World With Wildlife and Nature Crafts badges for the Bear Scouts.
Birds and Your Living World badges for Wolf Scouts.
Forester and Naturalist badges for Webelos.
Eagle Scout projects, stewardship and 10 K hike for Boy Scouts.

Girl Scouts
Watching Wildlife and Animals badges for Brownies.
"Wildlife" and "Ecology" badges for Junior Girl Scouts
"Wildlife" for Senior Girl Scouts.
Other programs that are ready for the scouts are on endangered species, birds, animals, insects, and water quality testing.
All Scouts are welcome to tour our Prairie Learning Center to learn more about the natural heritage of Iowa. All Scouts can also do the variety of hikes and stewardship activities on the refuge. Stewardship opportunities include removing unwanted trees and brush, seed collection, seed cleaning and picking up garbage along the roads. Other programs can be arranged to the scout leaders specifications.
