Native Prairie Plants
|
|
| The Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge is the largest
re-creation of the tallgrass prairie ecosystem anywhere in the United States.
Native grasses and prairie flowers are being nurtured, and more than 200
types of prairie seeds have been replanted. Many seeds are collected
by volunteers scouring the
state's roadsides, cemeteries and railroad beds for native plants during
the annual Volunteer Prairie Seed Collection. No experience is necessary
and all ages, skills and interests are invited to join. Collection
teams are led by experienced volunteers. To register for a team,
call 515-994-3400 or email buffalo@tallgrass.org. |

A family helps restore the native prairie
|
| The Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge is working to re-create
a prairie ecosystem that stretched unbroken throughout the midwestern United
States over 200 years ago. The tallgrass prairie ecosystem encompassed
parts of 14 states, including nearly all of Iowa. We invite you to
join this significant environmental effort that links people and nature . . . both to the past and to the future. |
